Why is Universal Design and accessibility important?

  • While itas clear we are positively impacting the experience of students with disabilities through accessible design, Universal Design and accessibility improves the experience for all students, thereby increasing student engagement, retention, and success across the board. Accessible design is good design.
  • Itas the law. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ADA Title II guarantee accessibility as a Civil Right. These laws have been tested in a number of recent cases, the most prominent being Penn State. There were two Department of Education Office for Civil Rights settlements at Ohio universities in fall 2014 and other suits are in progress.
