How does it work?
When you launch a web browser and request a page, the captive portal system checks to see if you have already authenticated from the computer you are using. If you have not authenticated, the system will redirect you to an authentication page.
From the authentication page you will be prompted to agree to Ohio Stateas Acceptable Use Policy and to provide your university credentials (username & password).
Once you have successfully logged on, the web browser will open a new tab containing the website as originally requested.
Note: Donat close that tab
The first tab contains a webpage that the captive portal uses to maintain a personas network session. If that tab is closed, the captive portal system will disable your ability to visit websites and use other network resources within a couple of minutes. You should not close that tab or type a different URL into the address bar.
Closing your network session
When you have finished and are ready to leave, before closing the web browser, go back to that first tab. In the upper right-hand corner, you will find a sign out button.
Clicking that button will end your network session and you can now close the browser.
Note: Staying secure
Closing the browser without using the sign out button first will not close the connection. If another person sits down at the computer after you leave, they may be able to use your network session to go online.
