Opening SmartSync Software
To open SmartSync teacher-station software, double-click the SmartSync icon on your desktop. By default, SmartSync software opens with the Thumbnails view active and the All Students tab selected.
Connecting to Students
When you set up student connection during the SmartSync student-station software installation you select one of three connection styles.
Allow Students to Browse for and Connect to Teachers
If you select this connection style, your students must connect to the correct Teacher ID manually.
Connect to the Same Teacher Every Time
If you select this connection style, students connect to the same Teacher ID automatically.
Accept a Connection from a Teacher
If you select this connection style, you connect to your students by selecting a class list (that is, a customizable list of the students who attend a particular class). Using this connection style prevents students from connecting to the wrong class or from taking too much time to connect.
Monitoring the Class
You can monitor the desktops of your students. The Thumbnails view displays images of your studentsa desktops, enabling you to determine at a glance that everyone is focused on the assigned task. You can view the thumbnails of your entire class or of a group. As an alternative, you can view an individual studentas desktop.
When youare monitoring a class or group, you can interact with the students by locking their desktops, blocking their Internet access, conducting a poll, responding to their questions, broadcasting your screen, broadcasting media files and shutting down their computers.
- To monitor the class or a group, click Thumbnails in the Views toolbar or select View > Thumbnails.
- To monitor the whole class, click the All Students tab.
- To monitor a specific group, click the groupas tab.
You can customize the appearance of the Thumbnails view by changing the size of the thumbnails, rearranging the thumbnails and editing the names of the thumbnails.
If a student logs off SmartSync software, a large red X appears over that studentas thumbnail.
To clear the thumbnails of disconnected students from the Thumbnails view, select View > Refresh.
Monitoring a Studentas Desktop
You can watch a live image of a studentas desktop from the Thumbnails view. You can view desktops simply to monitor studentsa work, but you can also take control of a studentas desktop, write over the top of studentas desktop, broadcast the desktop to the rest of the class, and more.
You can view a student desktop in Full Screen mode (the studentas desktop fills your screen) or Windowed mode (the studentas desktop appears in a resizable window, with the Thumbnails view open at the same time). Windowed mode lets you keep one eye on a studentas desktop and the other on other parts of your SmartSync software interface, such as the Chat and File Transfer views.
