To use the Secured Media Library, go to go.osu.edu/SecuredMediaLibrary and login with your Ohio State University username and password. If you have already authenticated to another site during in the same browser session you will not be prompted for credentials. The same URL is used by instructors and students. Direct links to specific titles are not possible.
When assigning titles to your class for viewing, simply inform your students of the assignment and provide a link in your Carmen course to the Secured Media Library using the URL http://go.osu.edu/SecuredMediaLibrary.
Use of the Secured Media Library is limited to instructors and students officially enrolled in Ohio State University courses and staff in direct support roles.
Individuals who are listed in SIS as Primary Instructor, Secondary Instructor or Teaching Assistant for a course will have instructor level access and can view all titles and manage playlists in which they have an instructor role.
Individuals who are enrolled in SIS as a student in a Registrar course will be able to view movies included in playlists actively assigned to that specific course. Program 60 students are not enrolled in courses in the traditional manner and must be manually added by Media Services. Please contact us if you are a Program 60 student or have on in your class.
Staff who need access to the Secured Media Library to support course development and are not enrolled in the course in SIS should contact Media Services for access.

Playlists and Assigning Movies to Your Class
Playlists are groups of one or more titles made accessible together as a single unit. Titles, independent of playlists, cannot be assigned to classes, but you can create a playlist containing only a single title. Once a playlist has been created it exists until manually deleted. This allows instructors that teach the same course syllabus again to reuse playlists and not have to recreate them from term to term.
Playlists are not assigned to courses upon creation. Once a playlist has been made and populated with titles it must be assigned to the desired course section. Assigning playlists to courses you are teaching allows your students to view movies at their convenience during the window you specify alleviating the need to use valuable class time for viewings. Playlists that will be available at a future date are not displayed to students until the future date is reached. At that time the playlist will automatically become available to the students. Once the assignment window has past the playlist will automatically disappear from the student's view.
Instructors can see playlists assigned to their courses on the Assigned Playlists tab since they are enrolled in their own courses. All playlists, including playlists not yet available to students, are visible on the Manage Playlists tab.
If a course instance has more than one instructor, i.e. the professor and a teaching assistant, playlists assigned by all the instructors will be visible to the course. However, playlists are unique to each user account, so a teaching assistant could not edit the faculty's playlist and vice versa.
On the Overview page you are presented with movie poster quick links to the nine most recent titles you personally have watched.
Below, you will see all movies currently assigned to any course you are enrolled in. This is just a listing of the movies and does not provide any infomration regarding the course name or playlist. To the right of each title is a countdown timer showing you the remianing time the title is available.
News items are listed at the bottom.
Assigned Playlists page
The Assigned Playlists page displays a listing of all movies currently assigned to any course you are enrolled in. In this view the titles are grouped together by playlist with the course name and playlist name on a tab at the top of each title grouping.
If no titles are listed, we suggest contacting your instructor. The most common causes for no titles to be listed are:
- The assignment window has passed
- The assignment window hasn't arrived
- The playlist wasn't assigned to the proper course section
- The playlist wasn't assigned to any course section
- The playlist does not contain any titles
- You are not enrolled in the course section
- You are a Program 60 student
Find Media page
The Find Media page provides instructors with a full listing of all titles within the library. Alphabetical pagination links at the top and numerical pagination links at the bottom provide a quick way to jump to a section of the list.
The search field at the top of the page searches keywords against Titles and Alternate Titles. Clicking the Advanced button will provide detailed search criteria options to further filter search results.
This page is only accessible by Instructors and Support Staff.
Each listing in the Secured Media Library represents a purchased physical copy of a movie currently in the possession of Media Services. Most titles included in the library are copies owned by the Media Services, however some titles may be temporary additions owned by faculty. These titles are indicated by a double red stripe at the top of the detail page and the words Closed Reserve - Owned by Faculty. Temporary Closed Reserve titles may be accessed by any instructor, but please be aware that these titles may disappear if the individual who owns them collects them, requiring the online version be disabled. Please contact Media Services if you would like to use a Closed Reserve title you do not own so that we can investigate adding it as a permanent title.
Manage Playlists page
The Manage Playlists page provides instructors with the ability to create, edit, assign, and delete playlists. Each playlist shows the titles that have been added and the date, time, and to which course section of any assignments.
This page is only accessible by Instructors.
