CarmenCanvas is Ohio State's online course management system, used by instructors, staff, and TAs to create and share materials. It's named for the song Carmen, Ohio -- Ohio Stateas alma mater.
While Carmen is the overall system, the learning management system at the core is called Canvas. Users can download mobile apps to access Canvas functionality. Functionality that is customized for Ohio State is often delivered via the Carmen landing page.

This Getting Started article includes recommendations to help instructors prepare a course for students. In many cases, this article contains links to more detailed articles about the various tools in Carmen.
Instructors are not required to use Carmen, but many find it to be a useful addition to their courses. Well before the start of the semester, we will display courses from the University Registraras system on the Carmen landing page. Instructors will have the option to create courses in Canvas if they wish. Courses must be published by the instructor before students can view the course.
Instructors and staff may request a Carmen course for practice or other university purposes by using the Carmen Space Request form on the Office of Distance Education & eLearning site. Instructors may create a master course for course development using the link on the landing page.
Course Management & the Carmen Landing Page
The Carmen Landing page is where you can add participants to a course, transfer final grades and create a master course.
Entering Your Course
Log in to Carmen by going to https://carmen.osu.edu
Click the Login button.
Type your lastname.# and University password.
Access your course from the My Courses widget and click the active course title link.
The My Courses widget displays all courses in which an individual is enrolled. For more information on navigating the widget and course management access, see My Course List (Instructors).
Use the Filter widget to search your loaded courses by role, term or status.
Unpublished (e.g. inactive) courses are accessible only to instructors. Students will be able to see all courses in which they are enrolled, but can only enter published (e.g., active) courses. Otherwise, students see the status of the course as "unpublished" or "not created".
If a course is not listed, you may not be listed as the instructor in the Registrar's system. Speak with your department's course scheduling staff about whether your instructional assignments have been entered in the Registraras system.
To completely log out of Carmen, close the browser when you are finished to prevent unauthorized use of your account.
