Start in CarmenCanvas

A 90-minute workshop that includes a guided, hands-on demonstration of the initial stages of building your course in CarmenCanvas followed by time for a Q&A session with the workshop presenters.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Differentiate when to use Pages and when to use Files
  • Create content using the rich content editor.
  • Set up Assignments to suit their needs.
  • Organize Pages, Files and Assignments using Modules.
  • Manipulate items in course navigation control.
  • Utilize Student View.
  • Locate help resources.

Assessments and Grading in CarmenCanvas

A 90-minute workshop that will teach people how to use the CarmenCanvas Assignments, Rubrics, Speedgrader, and Grade tools. This workshop will cover Assignments in more detail than Start in Canvas and will include time for a Q&A session with the workshop presenters.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Explore Assignments tool (touching on graded discussions and quizzes).
  • Identify appropriate assignment types for courses.
  • Consider the implications for grading different assignment types.
  • Build a rubric for an assignment.
  • Look at using SpeedGrader tool to assign grades.
  • Review the process for transferring final grades to Registrar.

Building Quizzes in CarmenCanvas

A 90-minute workshop that will teach people how to build effective quizzes in CarmenCanvas. This workshop will cover how to build, edit, and manage quizzes, and grade quizzes using SpeedGrader and will include time for a Q&A session with the workshop presenters.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Understand the different quiz types.
  • Build and edit quiz questions of various kinds, in both a quiz and a question bank.
  • Create and edit quizzes with both randomized and non-randomized question order.
  • Manage quiz properties.
  • View complete quizzes, as they would be experienced by students.
  • Manually grade quizzes, if needed.

Virtual Collaboration with CarmenConnect

This hands-on workshop will provide instructors and staff with the basic skills needed to hold a class or meeting in CarmenConnect (Ohio State's webinar service). This hands-on session is intended for beginners but is also good for users who want a better understanding of the system. The workshop instructor will be available for 30 minutes after the session ends for an open Q & A. If time permits, we will also practice communicating with each other in a live Connect session.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Navigate CarmenConnect.
  • Set up and manage an online meeting room.
  • Understand roles and permissions users in a Connect room.
  • Work with Pods, Layouts, Content, and other options.

Lecture Capture with Mediasite

A 90-minute session to learn about the Mediasite lecture capture service. This 90-minute session is a demonstration onlyathe workshop is not designed to provide hands-on practice, but you may bring your laptop if you would like to follow along. Facilitators will remain after the presentation for 30 minutes of Q&A with participants who need individual support.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Work with the Mediasite Desktop Recorder software on your PC or Mac.
  • Best practices for using the MyMediasite Portal to manage, edit and share your recordings with students.

Student Response with Top Hat

A 90-minute guided demonstration of Top Hat, the web-based system that allows instructors to create an interactive lecture experience. You can use Top Hat to poll students, present discussion prompts, display lecture material, track attendance and sync grades with Carmen. Students can respond to Top Hat questions and prompts using the devices they already bring to class, such as smartphones, laptops or tablets. Facilitators will remain after the presentation for 30 minutes of Q&A with participants who need individual support.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Use Top Hat to poll students, present discussion prompts, display lecture material, and track attendance.
  • Sync your Top Hat and CarmenCanvas course.

Build Your Own Website with U.OSU

Join us to make your own basic website in under 90 minutes! U.OSU, Ohio State's instance of Wordpress, is free for current students, staff and faculty. During this session, you'll explore a few sample websites to see whatas possible and consider why and how you will use U.OSU. Then we'll guide you through the process of creating a basic website. You'll leave the session with a template that can be easily expanded on your own time.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • View examples of how others use U.OSU.
  • Create a basic site navigation.
  • Create their first U.OSU site.
  • Know how to contact U.OSU support for help.

Getting Started with Vita

This session will introduce participants to Vita, Ohio State's new faculty information system. Vita combines the power of Symplectic Elements with customized functionality to meet the needs of Ohio State faculty. We will provide a general walkthrough of Elements, which harvests citation information and provides forms for manually entering additional information required in the P&T dossier. We will then explore Vita functionality for entering narratives and previewing the dossier.

This workshop will focus on the new Vita application and how faculty can work with their data. Questions related to the P&T dossier and the P&T process are best addressed by departmental or college P&T coordinators. If this is offered as a custom session, your P&T coordinator may be present.

Participants in this session will be able to:

  • Identify and navigate between Vita and Elements.
  • Set up their Elements profile and publication search, refine the results, and accept or reject citations.
  • Manage duplicate and manual entries in Elements.
  • Use Vita to enter narratives and preview the P&T dossier.
